1- Brief information about ultraviolet rays
Ultraviolet light is invisible to humans because it has shorter wavelengths than the light we can see. Within the UV spectrum, there are two types of rays UVA and UVB
- UVB rays cause sunburn and play a key role in developing skin cancer
- UVA rays cause skin damage that leads to tanning as well as skin aging and wrinkles and it also causes sunburn
2- How to choose sunscreen product?
To choose the right sunscreen we have to know what SPF.SPF stands for sun protection factor. The SPF number indicates the amount of sun exposure needed to cause sunburn on skin protected with sunscreen compared with skin that is not protected with sunscreen.
So choose the sunscreen with :
- SPF not less than 30. SPF number refers mainly to the amount of UVB protection it provides, the higher the number the more protection you have but keep in mind there is NO 100% protection.
- Use the product labeled by "broad spectrum” on the label, which means the product has ingredients that can protect you from UVA as well as UVB rays.
- Use the product labeled by "water-resistant ", Water Resistant Sunscreens, retain their stated SPF value after a certain time (either 40 or 80 minutes) in water or while sweating.
3- Tips to apply the sunscreen to get the ultimate results
- Apply the sunscreen at least 20 to 30 minutes before you go outdoors, whenever you will be exposed to sunlight
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours while you are outdoors, even if the product is labeled “all day.” If you get wet or perspire heavily, reapply sunscreen more frequently.
- Cover all exposed areas, including your ears, lips, face, and back of your hands.
- Apply a generous layer of sunscreen. Smooth it on rather than rubbing it in. A rule of thumb is that 45 ml of sunscreen is needed to cover all exposed skin to attain the stated level of protection.
- Women should apply sunscreens under makeup. If you wait to apply sunscreen until you go to the beach, you may already be perspiring, and moisture makes sunscreens less effective.
- Sunscreen is safe to use for children over the age of 6 months.
4- Natural steps to protect our skin beside sunscreen
- Apply sunscreen on your skin every day. Make it a habit, as you do with brushing your teeth.
- Avoid sun in the middle of the day, from about 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. The ultraviolet rays, which cause sunburn, are strongest during this time.
- Wear protective clothing. When you go outdoors. Long sleeves and wide-brimmed hat, help protect your body against the sun's harmful effects.
- Wear sunglasses that filter UV light.
- Watch out for bright surfaces, like sand, water and snow, which reflect UV and increase exposure
- The Shadow Rule An easy way to tell how much UV exposure you are getting is to look for your shadow:
- If your shadow is taller than you are (in the early morning and late afternoon), your UV exposure is likely to be lower.
- If your shadow is shorter than you are (around midday), you are being exposed to higher levels of UV radiation. Seek shade and protect your skin and eyes.
- check the area's Ultraviolet Index , which is A number from 0 and up is given to cities and areas around the United States to rate the strength of ultraviolet rays, also check the risk factor and the precautions to take
